JTG #38 Skin Positivity with Photographer Sophie Harris Taylor [Epidermis]

*Special announcement about the podcast*

Hi, I’m Caroline Dalia Kaliani, Functional Nutrition Practitioner, Herbal Medicine Mama & formulator of a botanical skincare line for rosacea.

A few years ago, I launched this free educational platform called Journey to Glow.

The goal? To explore natural, holistic and effective solutions for skin “issues”.

In my quest to share the effectiveness of natural medicine, I interviewed over 75+ holistic skin experts (Functional Medicine Practitioners, Naturopathic NDs, Holistic Nutritionists, Integrative Dermatologists, and Ayurvedic doctors…) as well as dozens of womxn who fully healed rosacea.

The Journey To Glow podcast reached over 100,000 listeners and received hundreds of 5 stars reviews in 30 different countries. But the best part? Were the weekly emails from listeners and readers who shared they have regained hope that they could heal their skin!

Mission accomplished!

After years of making the episodes available for free on mainstream podcast platforms, we are now rethinking how we want this information to be accessed.

If you’d like to be notified of the next steps, sign up for the Glowletter at the bottom of this page.

Thank you for listening and for being on the journey with us!

Skin Positivity with Photographer Sophie Harris Taylor [Epidermis]

In this episode we talk about the skin positivity movement with photographer Sophie Harris Taylor and her lastest exhibit, Epidermis.

The skin positivity movement is one of the best things to come out of social media. One project making major waves across Instagram right now is Epidermis by Sophie Harris Taylor. The series, which features 20 images of bare-faced women showcasing their common skin conditions including rosacea, acne and hyperpigmentation in all their glory, is a refreshing and much welcome move in the age of filters and Photoshop.

About our guest

Documenting the personal lives and experiences of her own and others, Sophie’s work is effortlessly truthful, approached with a sensitivity and confidence. She is renowned for her images created with natural and ambient light sources, which lend her work an unusual softness and depth. Typically portraiture based, with some elements of place and surroundings, she uses people to express her own preoccupations and concerns. Although seemingly diverse in subject matter and to an extent documentary, there is consistently some element of her own vulnerability. Regardless of content, Harris-Taylors’s work is crucially bound together by aesthetics, always seeking to in some way glorify that which is not conventional.

Sophie’s latest exhibit Epidermis breaks down the stigmas of skin issues. Sophie lives in London and received both her MA and BA (Hons) in Photography from Kingston University.

Coaching segment

We start the episode with a 5-minute coaching session where you’ll explore how to awaken to your true power on your journey to glow.

In this episode of the podcast Journey To Glow founder Caroline Frenette talks to Sophie Harris Taylor about:

  • The idea and movement behind Epidermis
  • Why young women feel so much pressure to hide their skin conditions
  • Why it’s so damn important for women to love themselves and the skin they’re in
  • The mental and emotional impact in the pursuit of perfect skin
  • The problem with social media and the fashion + beauty magazines projecting an unattainable image of beauty
  • What is body and skin positivity and how to join the movement
  • The beauty industry perpetrates an unrealistic representation of women with size zero and photoshopped, poreless skin
  • What impact Sophie hopes Epidermis will have
  • How we can change the beauty industry
  • How to lead courageously and embody the change we want to see in the world
