Did you know that addressing the mind-body connection through nervous system regulation and limbic system retraining can make a world of difference when it comes to reversing chronic conditions?
Intuitively, this has always made sense to me. But up until recently, I did not have the tools to put this into practice easily and quickly. Until I came across the work of Dr Cathleen King.
Cathleen King DPT is the founder of an educational platform called Primal Trust where she teaches about nervous system regulation and brain retraining.
After listening to several podcast interviews with Dr. Cat, I decided to try her program REGULATE.
I’ve been learning SO MUCH on what I think is the missing link to fully heal rosacea and chronic skin conditions!
My biggest takeaway so far has been learning about “cell danger response” and how it may block our best efforts to heal.
Because if our body doesn’t feel safe, it won’t heal.
Exploring nervous system regulation and putting the tools into practice has made me realize how much stress I was holding in my body, especially my stomach.
A personal example…
When I was a child I took ballet classes.
6 year old Caroline LOVED the tutus and ballet shoes. (She did NOT like to tuck her bangs inside the headband though!)
As you know, posture is everything in ballet, and holding your stomach in is just part of the deal.
Well, that stuck with me which means that at 54 years old I’d be standing in the kitchen cooking dinner holding my stomach in, not conducive to deep breathing! What we want is to breathe deeply FROM THE BELLY which allows us to access our vagal system.
As someone who’s been practicing yoga for yeeeeeears, I should know that right? But I was so used to it, I did not realize how much this habit was impacting my nervous system!
Does this seem insignificant in terms of stress on the body? That’s what I thought before I started learning about the principles taught in the free ebook How Healing Happens.
(My belly is totally relaxed as I’m typing this by the way.) 🙂
Another example…
Even though I intend on taking my time when I eat, I often feel rushed.
Clear skin starts with digestion. Good digestion rests on a vagal (parasympathetic, relaxed) state.
Slowing down, feeling relaxed, properly chewing our food and “eating with love” (my Naturopath always says that…) is essential to break down food which has a huge impact on our gut + skin health.
Fun fact: Did you know that stress (even small stresses) can impact stomach acid production and your gut microbiome?
Digestive enzymes can only do so much!
Now, before I eat, I take 3 minutes to do a breathing exercise I learned in REGULATE. It puts my body in a parasympathetic (vagal) calm state so I can digest my food better and absorb nutrients.
*I find that most of my clients have nutrient deficiencies and digestive issues. The key to clear skin starts with optimizing digestion.
I’ve also learned powerful tools that enable me to release emotional stress quickly so I can shift into a more loving, accepting + calm state.
