Rosacea can be a real hassle—redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes even red, pus-filled bumps on your face. While there’s no magic cure, detoxing your liver is a crucial holistic component to healing rosacea.

Let’s dive into how liver detoxification can benefit your skin and help heal rosacea.

Hey Rosacea, what’s the deal?

First off, let’s break down rosacea. It usually affects the central parts of your face—think forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin. Flare-ups can be triggered by anything from sun exposure and spicy foods to stress and certain skincare products.

But managing symptoms and avoiding triggers that cause flare up will not lead to a full resolution. To heal rosacea, you need to get to the root causes that created rosacea in the first place.

Liver detoxification is just one of the important factors to consider, so let’s jump into the benefits of liver detoxification and how it can support the healing of rosacea.

The Liver-Rosacea Link

Your liver is a detox powerhouse. It breaks down and gets rid of toxins from your body. But when it’s overloaded—thanks to a poor diet, too much alcohol, or environmental pollutants—it can’t function at its best. This toxin buildup contributes to inflammatory conditions like rosacea.

How Liver Detox Helps Rosacea

1. Less Inflammation: Detoxing your liver helps cut down on inflammation throughout your body, including your skin. With fewer toxins causing trouble, you’ll see a reduction in redness and irritation.
2. Better Digestion: A healthy liver means better digestion and nutrient absorption. This can help with any gut issues that might be making your rosacea worse.
3. Cleaner Blood: Your liver filters toxins out of your blood, keeping it clean. A detoxed liver means fewer toxins in your bloodstream, which will reduce rosacea symptoms such as redness, skin sensitivity and breakouts.
4. Balanced Hormones: The liver helps metabolize hormones. By detoxing, you help balance your hormones, which can be a game-changer for your skin.

Conclusion

Alkalinity As The Key to Healing Rosacea

If you’re struggling with rosacea and dreaming of clear, glowing skin, you’ve probably tried all sorts of remedies. One idea that’s getting a lot of buzz is the importance of keeping your body alkaline. In this post, we’ll break down why an alkaline body can support the healing of rosacea and get that clear skin you’ve been wanting.

In this post about the link between alkalinity and rosacea, I’ll explain why an alkaline body can help you heal rosacea and get that clear skin you’ve been wanting.

What’s Rosacea Anyway?

Rosacea is a  healable “skin condition” that manifests as redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes small, red, pus-filled bumps on your face.

I’m putting skin condition in quotes because rosacea can be fully healed when we address the root causes.

Why Alkalinity Matters:

Your body’s pH level measures how acidic or alkaline it is, on a scale from 0 to 14. Below 7 is acidic, above 7 is alkaline.

Followers of the alkaline diet believe that keeping your body slightly alkaline (around 7.35 to 7.45) can make a big difference in your overall health, including your skin.

Here’s why…

It Reduces Inflammation

An alkaline body has been shown to lower inflammation. Since inflammation is a big part of what causes rosacea’s redness and irritation, eating alkaline foods like fruits and veggies helps calm things down.

Detoxifying The Body

Staying alkaline is also said to help your body get rid of toxins more efficiently. Since toxins have a direct impact on your skin, eating a diet that lowers your body’s acidity will help your skin clear up.

Balancing Your Skin’s Microbiome

Your skin’s health depends a lot on the balance of bacteria living on it. An alkaline body make it harder for bad bacteria to thrive, helping you avoid flare-ups as you work on root cause healing and keep your skin’s barrier strong.

Using pure, plant botanicals in your skincare is another way of ensuring your skin microbiome is respected and strengthened. This is why I intentionally chose the ingredients in my rosacea skincare line.

How to Go Alkaline

Want to give the alkaline approach a try? Here are some easy tips:

Eat More Plants: Load up on alkaline-supportive foods like fruits, veggies, nuts, and seeds. These can help balance out the acidity from processed foods and meat.

Drink Lots of Lemon Water: Staying hydrated is crucial in removing toxins. Adding lemon to your water is alkalizing once it’s metabolized by your body, even though it tastes acidic.

Nervous System Regulation: Stress absolutely makes your body more acidic. Try meditation, yoga and breathing exercises to keep your stress levels in check. I’m also a BIG fan of nervous system regulation (game-changing).

Foods That Promote An Acidic Environment

Certain foods are known to create acidity in the body. These are often referred to as acid-forming foods. Here are some common ones:

1. Processed Foods:
   • Packaged snacks
   • Fast food
   • Processed meats (like sausages and hot dogs)
2. Sugary Foods and Beverages:
   • Soda
   • Candy
   • Desserts with high sugar content
3. Grains:
   • White bread
   • White rice
   • Pasta made from refined flour
4. Animal Products:
   • Red meat (beef, pork)
   • Poultry
   • Fish
   • Dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt)
5. Alcohol:
   • Beer
   • Wine
   • Spirits
6. Caffeine:
   • Coffee
   • Black tea
   • Energy drinks filled with sugar

Reducing the intake of these acid-forming foods and balancing your diet with more alkaline-forming foods (like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds) helps maintain a better pH balance in your body.

*A proper protein intake is essential to a healthy body so please note that I’m not saying to avoid meat protein. Adding  lots of fresh, organic veggies to your plate is essential to balance alkalinity as well as eliminating inflammatory foods + working on gut healing,

Conclusion

While we’re still learning about the link between alkalinity and rosacea, keeping your body more alkaline is a simple and natural way to lower inflammation in the body.

But alkalinity alone will most likely not heal rosacea. To fully heal your skin you’ll have to address underlying issues.

The Gua Sha has recently exploded in the beauty market, so I wanted to share a few thoughts and resources.

First, I want to stress the importance of investing in a high-quality tool bought from a trusted company.

Ever since writing my post on Gua Sha the Glow blog, I’ve been bombarded with emails from Chinese companies wanting to wholesale me their Gua Sha tools. 

Upon further research into these companies, I could not verify the quality of the stones or find any “real humans” behind the business, people who would talk to me, answer my questions and provide answers to my concerns about sustainability and best practices when it comes to mining crystals.

A high-quality Gua Sha stone is supposed to be made of real quartz or semi-precious stone but you’ll likely find that the cheaper tools are made of plastic. We don’t want that.

So, with the rise of this trend, I have concerns about quality and sustainability.

The Gua Sha Technique

Angling the Gua Sha tool as close to parallel with your skin as possible (you don’t want to dig the edge straight in like you’re chopping), place the fingers of your free hand close to the tool’s edge to provide some resistance, and then gently sweep the tool up and out toward the perimeter of your face.

At the end of each stroke, give the tool a little extra wiggle to help release the tension.

Repeat each stroke at least three times, concentrating on puff-prone areas, like the cheeks and under-eyes. The key is to be gentle, especially where the skin is thinner, like around the eyes.

Gua Sha & Rosacea

Since my journey to glow is all about healing my rosacea naturally and holistically, I researched to see if anyone was documenting the benefits or side effects of gua sha for rosacea.

As you know, going down the Google rabbit hole means you’ll find contradictory information. So, as always, you’ll have to use your judgment and listen to your intuition once you’ve done your own research.

Here’s what I found on Gua Sha and rosacea…

In a recent Vogue article, Britta Plug was quoted saying that she “has been using Gua Sha tools in her holistic facial practice for years, helping clients relieve nearly every skin condition from rosacea to dryness and adult acne.” She says, “With this type of treatment, we’re moving lymph, which carries away toxins or, in this case, blackheads, and stimulating the chi or prana.”

However, she advises against Gua Sha for anyone with inflamed skin (a.k.a. those with acne, rosacea, or sunburn). Likewise, she recommends that sensitive skin types and those prone to breakouts stick to less intense roller massages or seek out a pro to get personalized instructions for how to treat their skin properly with gua sha.

I’ve also heard Britta say in one of her tutorials on Instagram that it’s best to avoid areas with inflamed cystic acne, which is common sense really.

Intuitively, I have a feeling that gua sha would help relieve redness and stuck energy, which, for me, is on my cheeks. However, I would not gua sha on areas where my rosacea was unusually inflamed. Again, it’s common sense.

A Chinese Medicine Approach To Gua Sha For Rosacea

One of the more interesting articles I found on Gua Sha and rosacea was written by Diana Hermann, owner of Zizai Dermatology, a Chinese medicine clinic specializing in skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema.

In her article, Diana Hermann, a licensed acupuncturist and board-certified Chinese Herbal Medicine practitioner, explains that, when the technique of Gua Sha is used on the face, a much lighter pressure is applied than on the body to not raise the “sha” (the redness that appears when you Gua Sha the body vigorously).

The skin on our face is much more delicate and has more capillaries than elsewhere on the body, so there’s a greater risk of bruising, which we obviously want to avoid, especially with sensitive, rosacea-prone skin.

When performed correctly, facial Gua Sha is said to have wonderful, lasting benefits for the face and complexion such as reducing redness, inflammation, and blemishes.

Skin Types That Should Steer Clear of Gua Sha

Anyone with dermatitis or easily irritated, hyper-sensitive skin should be careful with Gua Sha, such as those who often break out in rashes or dermatitis-like skin irritation as a result of using new products or from their skin being touched or massaged.

Is Gua Sha Appropriate If You Have Acne, Eczema, Dermatitis Or Psoriasis?

If your skin is currently reactive — if you have dermatitis, eczema, inflamed acne or psoriasis on your face — it is recommended to wait until the skin is brought into a more stable state before trying Gua Sha.

Also, people who have had fillers or Botox should wait at least three months after their procedure to do facial Gua Sha on those areas where they received injections. They can do Gua Sha on other areas, or at least the neck. Releasing the neck is essential for facial work and can even help to create change and improve skin health.

The Gua Sha Experts

As with any skin care, you’ll want to be mindful of doing a little research or at least watch a few videos so that you know what you’re doing to avoid damaging or bruising the skin. Also, make sure you’re learning from trustworthy experts who’ve been using gua sha tools effectively and can guide you on how to gua sha safely.

Exploring the Root Causes of Rosacea

In this blog post, we’ll explore the root causes of rosacea and the underlying factors that may contribute to its development. Please note that this is not a deep dive but an overview.

Rosacea is characterized by redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes small, red, pus-filled bumps. While the popular approach is to “treat” rosacea with pharmaceutical creams, antibiotics and other drugs, this approach never actually results in healing.

To fully heal rosacea, we need to understand and address the root causes. (There is never just one root cause, if there was, healing rosacea would be easy.)

Genetics as a root cause of rosacea?

A quick Google on the topic of the root causes of rosacea will reveal that a factor influencing the onset of rosacea is genetics. Research suggests a hereditary component, with individuals having a family history of rosacea being more predisposed to developing the condition. Specific genetic markers may play a role in determining an individual’s susceptibility to rosacea, highlighting the importance of understanding one’s family medical history.

However, in my work with clients, I have seen that genetics was rarely a factor as clients reported not having anyone in the family with rosacea. (I know this was the case for me.)

More recently, research has shown that genetics only account for 10% or less of an outcome, while epigenetics (influencing factors over the genetic component) accounts for over 90%. So to say that we have no control over the genetic expression of rosacea would be false. Nutrition, lifestyle and identifying the root causes while greatly affecting your skin.

Dysregulation of the Immune System as a root cause of rosacea

The immune system’s role in rosacea is a subject of growing interest among researchers. Some studies propose that an abnormal immune response may contribute to the development of rosacea. Inflammation plays a key role, and the immune system’s overreaction to environmental triggers may lead to the characteristic redness and swelling associated with the condition.

So what can trigger the immune system? Food sensitivities, pathogens such as viruses, parasites and bacteria, candida or bacterial overgrowth and an unhealthy, leaky gut.

Fix the gut and a big part of what triggers rosacea is taken care of.

Vascular Abnormalities in Rosacea

Vascular abnormalities are another aspect of rosacea’s complex puzzle. Blood vessels near the skin’s surface may dilate excessively, leading to increased blood flow and redness. Factors such as sun exposure, spicy foods, and alcohol, known triggers for many individuals with rosacea, can exacerbate these vascular changes.

Understanding and managing these triggers are important components of effective rosacea care but are only part of the puzzle, they are not getting us to the root causes. To fully heal rosacea, we need to look deeper than the skin.

Cathelicidin LL-37 and rosacea

Research has shown that cathelicidin LL-37 is strongly increased in the affected area of skin in rosacea. This peptide has proinflammatory action and an “alarm” function, affecting vascular growth, thus leading to angiogenesis and neovascularization.

Although this helps us understand a bit more about the physical manifestation of rosacea, we still need to dig deeper as to WHY cathelicidin LL-37 is increased in the first place.

Microscopic Demodex Mites and Bacteria

Another possible root cause of rosacea is Demodex mites. In recent years, researchers have explored the role of microscopic organisms in the development of rosacea. Demodex mites, tiny arachnids that inhabit human skin, have been found in higher concentrations on the skin of individuals with rosacea.

Additionally, certain bacteria, particularly Helicobacter pylori, have been studied for their potential connection to rosacea.

While these associations are not definitive causes (we still need to ask WHY are there an overabundance of Demodex on rosacea skin?!), they provide valuable insights into the intricate relationship between the skin and its microscopic inhabitants.

Environmental Triggers (not a root cause of rosacea IMO)

Sensitivity to environmental factors or triggers are not, in my opinion, root causes but influencing factors.  Ex: sensitivity to sunlight, extreme temperatures, spicy foods, and certain skincare products that can trigger flare-ups. Identifying and avoiding these triggers is an important aspect of “managing” rosacea, yes, but will not bring about full healing as to do so, we have to dig deeper.

I am mentioning it here because it’s important to know and manage triggers so that you can at least feel better temporarily WHILE doing the deeper healing work.

Environmental Toxicity

Environmental toxicity is different than a trigger as it can be a root cause of rosacea. Examples of environmental toxicity could be exposure to mold, chemicals and heavy metals just to name a few.

This brings us to gut healing…

Gut dysbiosis & pathogens as a root cause of rosacea

Other possible root causes of rosacea to consider are food sensitivities, leaky gut, SIBO, parasites and candida. All of these affect the gut microbiome which affects the skin. Addressing gut dysbiosis is crucial in healing rosacea. Gut healing is therefore the first step in the bio-individual rosacea healing blueprint I create for my clients.

Hormonal Imbalances and Rosacea

Hormones play a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes, including those related to the skin. Fluctuations or imbalances in hormone levels can influence the development and exacerbation of skin conditions, including rosacea.

Emotional root cause of rosacea

The emotional root cause of rosacea is not often talked about yet, traumas that were established in childhood can manifest later in life as rosacea, acne, eczema or psoriasis. This is a complex topic that Nadeije and I explore in our program Self-Heal.

Conclusion

Rosacea’s root causes are undoubtedly intricate and multifaceted, involving a delicate interplay of genetic, immune, vascular, and environmental factors. The sooner you shift from fixing the skin (rosacea is not a skin issue but an internal inflammatory issue) the faster you can see progress on your journey to glow.

Unlocking the Benefits of Celery Juice for Rosacea

Rosacea, a chronic (but not incurable) skin condition characterized by redness, inflammation, and visible blood vessels, can be a source of discomfort and self-consciousness for many individuals. While there is no cure in the form of a pill for rosacea, many people have fully healed when they addressed the underlying root causes.

While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing rosacea, celery juice is so popular that I wanted to share the benefits of celery juice for rosacea. I personally had quite a big reaction when I did a 30-day celery juice challenge (I share the whole story here) but there are some benefits in including celery juice in your diet when healing rosacea.

In this article, we delve into the potential benefits of incorporating celery juice into your daily routine as a complementary approach to healing rosacea.

The Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Celery Juice For Rosacea:

Celery is packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that can help soothe irritated skin from the inside-out. Chronic inflammation is a hallmark of rosacea, and celery juice may contribute to reducing inflammation, providing relief from redness and discomfort such as itchiness caused by Demodex mites.

Celery Juice is Rich in Vitamins and Minerals:

Celery is a nutritional powerhouse, containing essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin K, vitamin C, potassium, and folate. These nutrients play a crucial role in supporting overall skin health. And because nutritional deficiencies are often a root cause of rosacea, adding celery juice will provide extra nutrients.

Hydration and Detoxification:

Celery juice is known for its high water content, which helps keep the body hydrated. Proper hydration is essential for maintaining healthy skin. Additionally, celery contains compounds that may support the body’s natural detoxification processes, potentially flushing out toxins that could contribute to rosacea flare-ups.

However, accelerating the detoxifying process when the body isn’t ready or the liver is already burned by toxicity (which is most likely the case if you have rosacea) will cause a skin crisis. This is what happened when I did my 30-day celery juice challenge (hoping it would help rosacea) but the opposite happened: MAJOR skin crisis. While scientific evidence on the alkalizing properties of celery juice is limited, anecdotal reports suggest positive outcomes for individuals with rosacea.

Rosacea, Celery Juice And the Gut Health Connection:

There is growing recognition of the gut-skin connection, with an imbalance in gut flora contributing to skin conditions, including rosacea. Celery juice is said to support digestive health by acting as a natural diuretic and promoting a healthy microbiome. A balanced gut will, in turn, positively impact skin conditions including rosacea.

Celery Juice Is Easy to Incorporate Into Your Routine (If You Can Stomach It!):

One of the key advantages of celery juice is its simplicity. It’s easy to prepare, requiring only fresh, organic celery stalks and a juicer or blender. Incorporating celery juice into your daily routine can be a convenient and nutritious way to enhance your overall health, potentially offering relief from rosacea symptoms such as Demodex mites, flare-ups and redness.

While celery juice is not a cure for rosacea (to fully heal rosacea you need to get to the root causes), many individuals have reported positive outcomes when incorporating it into their daily routine. As with any natural remedy, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet.

In conclusion: is celery juice a good thing for rosacea?

Celery juice may not be a one-size-fits-all solution, but for some, it could be a refreshing and nutritious addition to their holistic approach to managing rosacea symptoms or better, getting on the path to healing from the inside out. Remember that individual responses may vary (I can attest to that!), and it’s crucial to prioritize a balanced diet, proper skincare, and other lifestyle factors in the quest for healthier, more radiant skin.

Which natural skincare is best for rosacea?

This post aims to shed light on the best natural skincare for rosacea and give you some pointers to help you shop smarter.

As someone who has done extensive research on rosacea skincare and healing rosacea naturally, I understand how challenging it can be to shop for rosacea skincare products.

Over the years I’ve learned to read labels and run ingredients in the EWG.org database to avoid harsh chemicals but also to avoid falling prey to greenwashing. (Greenwashing is when a company uses tactics to make you think their products are safe and natural such as using the color green on their packaging and using words such as “natural” which really doesn’t mean much…)

Over the years I’ve also accumulated a counter full of products that I couldn’t use either because my skin reacted to it! This is the reason why I decided to formulate, after much testing and research, my own line of botanical skincare for rosacea.

So hopefully this rosacea skincare guide will help you save time, and money and give you some pointers on how to shop smartly if you have sensitive, rosacea-prone skin.

Natural Skincare for Rosacea

When shopping for natural rosacea skincare products (or anything really) I try to find as much information as possible about the brand to make sure our values align. I believe that as consumers, we are voting with our dollars, and what we choose to invest in or purchase impacts the environment, farmers, communities and ultimately our health.

Becoming a health advocate and demanding that companies become transparent in their practices / sourcing won’t happen at the government level, it must be a grassroots movement led by empowered humxns. 

Here are some questions I like to ask before purchasing a product:

1. Is the product sustainably made or does the company have sustainable practices?
2. Are the ingredients organic or wildcrafted?
3. Is the company transparent about its sourcing, testing, manufacturing process?
4. Does the brand’s mission contribute to a better world?
5. Do they have stellar customer service?
6. Are they cruelty-free?
7. Are the products endorsed by non-affiliated experts?
8. Is the company doing anti-racist work and highlighting brands from the BIPOC community?
9. Are they using plastic or glass?
10. Do they offset carbon production by planting trees?
11. Are the workers — especially in third world countries — paid BEYOND fair wages?
12. Are the products made in China / Asia or locally? If made in China, why?

These values are the reason why I created my own line of natural, organic skincare for rosacea. Each medicinal plant, carrier oil, essential oil, butter or wax used in my skincare line holds the highest of standards. As a Skin Herbalist, it is paramount for me to use pure, active botanicals that have been researched for their proven benefits in healing a compromised skin barrier.

Why choose natural, nontoxic & organic skincare for rosacea

So why is it important to choose clean, nontoxic, organic skincare if you have rosacea?

No category of consumer products is subject to less government oversight than cosmetics and personal care products. Although many of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics and skincare products likely pose little risk, long term exposure has been linked to serious health problems such as hormonal issues and cancer.

The truth is that womxn use anywhere between 5 to 15 skin + haircare products in one day, so those “little amounts” of chemicals add up.

Since 2009, 595 cosmetics manufacturers have reported using 88 chemicals, in more than 73,000 products, that have been linked to cancer, birth defects or reproductive harm.

Many of the chemicals that are banned in Europe are still found in cosmetics in the US:

• Formaldehyde, a known carcinogen
• Mercury, which can damage the kidneys and nervous system.
• Dibutyl and diethylhexyl phthalates, which disrupt hormones and damage the reproductive system
• Isobutyl and isopropyl parabens, which disrupt hormones and harm the reproductive system
• The long-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances known as PFAS, which have been linked to cancer
• M- and o-phenylenediamine, used in hair dyes, which irritate and sensitize the skin, damage DNA and can cause cancer

All of these toxic chemicals have been banned by the European Union and many other nations, and many have been slated for removal from the store brands of major U.S. retailers, including Target, Rite Aid, Walgreens and CVS Health.

All of these toxic chemicals become a burden on your liver and a CRUCIAL element in healing rosacea is to have a liver that functions optimally. (Keep pumping those toxic chemicals in your system — including chemicals such as glyphosate, herbicides and pesticides from the non-organic foods you eat — and your liver will forever be busy trying to rid your body of toxins, toxins that ultimately show up on your skin as rosacea.)

Quick tips when shopping for natural rosacea skincare:

• Look for anti-inflammatory + soothing ingredients such as blue tansy, calendula, chamomile
• Look for organic or wild crafted plants
• Avoid overly processed coconut oil which can clog pores
• Avoid harsh chemicals and alcohols
• Water-based products contain emulsifiers, read the label carefully
• In doubt, run ingredients through the Skin Deep database
• Avoid the following: petrochemicals (mineral oil, petroleum), parabens, SLSs, synthetic fragrances

Ingredients that are beneficial for rosacea skin:

• Niacinamide (see a list of products further down)
• Aloe vera
• Helichrysum Italicum, Blue Tansy, Rose and Frankincense essential oils 
• Cooling and calming hydrosols such as Rose, Immortelle (Helichrysum Italicum) or Melissa officionalis (learn more about hydrosols)
